Tips for Healthy Halloween Parties


BOOtiful Halloween Treats!

  Not-So-Tricky Halloween Treats.  These are sure to please all your little ghosts and goblins:

  • Individual packets of dried fruit, raisins, nuts, peanuts ( be careful choking hazard)
  • Peanut-butter crackers, cheese crackers, pretzels
  • Tiny plastic animals, figurines, finger puppets, whistles (use caution choking hazard)
  • Halloween stickers, coloring books, puzzle books, pencils, erasers, note pads
  • Buttons, pins, spider rings, trinket jewelry, bracelets, friendship rings, hair barrettes, ponytail holders, shoelaces


  • Home-baked goods, labeled with your name and address
  • Money
  • Individual pudding packs
  • Fruit juice boxes
  • Sugarless bubble gum
  • Crayons
  • Trading cards
  • Restaurant coupons


Dealing with all the Loot
Wondering what to do once your children’s Halloween loot makes it home? In terms of dental health, nibbling on a piece of candy here and there will continually bathe the teeth in sugar and acid. This repeated exposure is likely to cause tooth decay. The best idea is to let your children eat as much candy as they want at one time and then make sure that their teeth are thoroughly brushed and flossed.  Be sure to set a limit on how long the candy stays around. For example, any leftovers get thrown away after 5 days. This not only will get them back on a healthy schedule but will remove the tempting goodies from you, too!

Halloween Party Recipes for Kids

Sticks, Stones, Brains, and Bones

4 cups of popped popcorn

2 cups toasted oat cereal

2 cups pretzel nuggets or sticks

1 cup peanuts

2 tbsp butter, melted

1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

1/2 tbsp dry Italian salad dressing mix


In a large roasting pan, combine popcorn, cereal, pretzels and peanuts. Mix together. Heat for 5 minutes in a 300-degree oven. Remove. Drizzle with butter. Sprinkle on cheese and salad dressing mix. Stir to coat all pieces. Makes 9 cups.


Magic Potion in Creepy Crawly Ice Ring

Creepy Crawly Ice Ring (1 cup gummy worms and 1 quart lemonade - Arrange gummy worms in bottom of a 5-cup ring mold. Fill with lemonade. Freeze until solid. Remove ice ring from its mold and float in a punch bowl.)

1 cup boiling water

2 (3 oz) packages Sugar Free lime-flavored gelatin

3 cups cold water

1-1/2 quarts carbonated Sugar Free lemon-lime beverage, chilled


Prepare Creepy Crawly ice ring and freeze until solid. Pour boiling water over gelatin in heatproof punch bowl. Stir until gelatin dissolves. Stir in cold water. Add lemon-lime beverage. Stir well. Remove ice ring from its mold and float in punch.  Makes 10 one-cup servings





Halloween presents us with many opportunities to eat lots of sugar and other unhealthy items. Here are a few tips to make the best of this “sticky” situation.  


Moderation. Be a good role model and set limits on how much candy you let your children eat and      explain the reasons for the limits ahead of time.


Share. Encourage your child to share their candy with friends.


Trade. Perhaps your children would want to trade some of their candy for inexpensive toys or for a small amount of spending money.


Tricks or Treats - Here are a few alternatives to candy:


Toys ■ Stickers ■ Bubbles ■ Cereal ■ Pretzels ■ Popcorn ■ Raisins ■ Sugar-free gum or candy

Salty Bones - adapted from Disney’s Family Fun website




1 tube of refrigerated breadstick dough, whole wheat if available (11 ounce tube makes 12 bones)

Coarse salt




1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Unroll tube of dough and separate the rectangular pieces.

2. Working with one piece at a time, stretch the dough to lengthen it a bit and then use kitchen scissors or a knife to cut a 2 inch slit in the center of each end (to make the ball joints of each bone).

3. Shape the flaps of dough into knobs resembling the ends of a bone.

4. Place the dough bones on an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them a few inches apart, and sprinkle on a little coarse salt. Bake the bones until they are lightly golden brown, about 12 minutes.
